Profile:

Abhra is a 1st year PhD student who hails from Kolkata, which is situated in the Eastern region of India. He received a BS (Honors) in Economics (with minors in Math and Political Sciences) and an MS in Economics (with specializations in Labor Economics and International Economics) from The University of Calcutta, India in 2014 and 2016 respectively. He has worked as a Research Assistant at the Department of Economic Sciences in The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur for a project funded by IDRC, Canada. He is greatly interested in issues in Development Economics that connect different domains like Labor, Health, Education, Information. Through his work, he wishes to address problems that concern the Indian Subcontinent. Studying at UNM happens to be a great opportunity for him to experience and adapt to the American culture, make life-long friends ,and of course to explore the subject of Economics at greater depths. Abhra is an ardent reader and loves to play the bass guitar.

Research Interests:

  • Welfare of children: Malnutrition, Basic education, Access to proper care etc., and how that would affect other aspects in a country.
  • Labor Economics: Workers' ability to signal their efficiency in the job market, Gender-wage inequality, Work environment and well-being of laborers etc.
