Distinguished Alumni - Honorable Matthew Garcia

Under the direction of our new Department Administrator, Jennifer Silva, the Department of Economics hosted a celebratory convocation ceremony to honor four newly minted PhD's, 12 MA graduates, and 33 BA graduates. The ceremony also included recognition of several current students who received awards and scholarships including the Gerald and Vivian Boyle Memorial Graduate Student Award, the Michelle Elizabeth Canaday Memorial Endowed Scholarship, the Julian S. Duncan Scholarship in Latin American Economic Studies, and the Alfred L. Parker Ph.D. Endowed Scholarship in Economics.

The Honorable Matthew Garcia, a Federal Judge for the District of New Mexico, received the 2025 Department of Economics Distinguished Alumnus awardee and gave the Convocation address. Judge Garcia expressed confidence that the graduates, by doing well in their careers, would also be doing good.
