Three out-of-state economics alumni zoomed into the Econ Department earlier this week to share their experiences with undergraduate majors. The remote “Pizza with Professionals” event was co-hosted with the UNM Alumni Association.

Belinda Johnson (UNM Econ BA 2015 / USC Master’s in Legal Studies) is a supervisory field examiner for the National Labor Relations Board in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cyndi Lavasek (UNM Econ BA 2014 ) is a senior director of product management for H1 in Seattle. Charles Linsmeier (UNM Econ & English BA 2000 / CUNY Political Science MA) is an executive vice president at Macmillan Learning in New York City.

The alumni agreed that the BA in Economics is “a great signal” of a rigorous analytical mind much valued in the work place. Some ideas about what makes a job candidate stand out:

  • Analytical, reading and writing skills! (Belinda)
  • Willingness to learn and examples of your ability to navigate ambiguous and complex problems (Charles)
  • Curiosity and familiarity with what’s new. For her it was Tableau. Today it is AI. (Cyndi)

Students who zoomed in from the Econ Department enjoyed pizza provided by the Alumni Association. Afterwards, they expressed their excitement about the career experiences and advice shared.
